Combo Guard/Wing. Tremendous 3 and D player at his floor and a two-way playmaker as his ceiling.
Strengths: Quick twitch athlete with excellent strength and general athleticism. Has active hands and is able to pick up full court. Loves to do the little things that help his team win, no matter the level. Takes charges and hustles after loose balls – not afraid to do the dirty work. Sprints his lane. Can play with the ball in or out of his hands. Plays 1-4 but is most comfortable at a 2-3 spot. Can play up to the 4-spot due to strength. Beautiful set shot that allows teams to space off the ball.
Weaknesses: Can be too jumpy with closeouts, needs to be able to capture his man. Lack of communication on the floor. Very quiet at times.
Opportunities: Can improve his closeouts. When his closeout is good, the guy goes nowhere but sometimes he is too jumpy and reactive. Learning to fly around the floor and cover more ground with better control. Should continue to work on strong, two-foot finishes around the rim and using his strength to bump off weaker or smaller defenders. Can be more efficient with his dribbles when finishing.
Players he can be like: Marcus Smart, Younger Kyle Lowry, Shea Ili
Riley Sa is a combo guard who brings a selfless energy to the floor. Blessed with a solid yet quick twitched body that has multi-directional explosiveness. Riley has played the role of the main ball handler and scorer for his high school team but also adapted the ability to become a key role player when joining select and rep teams.
Riley’s best attribute is he can defend 1-3 all 94 feet, his on-ball defence and not letting ball handlers get past him are elite. A monster in all types of pick and roll coverages, he stays connected to his player and makes the correct reads and adjustments needed.
Offensively, Riley can also play 1-3. He can also make great decisions out of the short roll when running guard to guard screens. Ball handling allows him to keep possession of the rock while bringing it up the floor or using ball screens. His finishing package includes both two- and one-foot finishes both above and below the rim. If the finish at the rim isn’t there, Riley possesses the ability to pull up as well as step back into on balance shots due to his overall strength and control of his body. When playing off the ball, Sa can use road runner catches as well as slashing to score quickly and vs contact. He hits a three ball at a high clip off both catch and shoot or off the move.
Riley would provide any team that wants him a great worker who leads by example, a student of the game and someone who is willing to work outside of their comfort zone to better themselves.
Adam Morgan – U19 / Eagles Academy and Rams Assistant
Riley Sa is a player that adds value to all programs he plays for. I have been coaching or coaching against Riley Sa for 4 years now and he is always impacting winning in whatever role he plays. When playing for Ashburton College, Riley plays the role of the star player where he is responsible for guarding the best player from the opposing team while also having a majority of the offensive volume run through him. When playing for a rep team, Riley can then become an elite 3 and D player. He picks up the opposing team’s best player and shoots a high % from the corners and wings while also being great at attacking long closeouts. Riley Sa is the exact type of player any team would want if they are looking for glue guys that add value in winning basketball.
Roasty Douglas – Ashburton College Senior Boys 2018-2022
Ashburton College doesn’t keep all stats but I am 100% confident that Riley Sa would lead every category.
The hardest worker the college has seen, Riley has dedicated himself to improving his game at a relentless pace. The hours of honing his craft have become evident with the success he has had on the floor.
He is a humble athlete who lets his game speak for him and an awesome teammate respected by his peers, opposition, and everyone who has interacted with him.
Riley has a fantastic basketball IQ and will play both ends of the floor. He’s equally good at attacking the hoop, dropping the dime and shooting the 3. He will score points.
It was an absolute pleasure to coach Riley and I wish him the world with where the game may take him.
